Steamed Rice Dumpling (undi) is one of the most popular of recent trending meals on earth. It is easy, it is quick, it tastes delicious. It is enjoyed by millions every day. They’re nice and they look wonderful. Steamed Rice Dumpling (undi) is something that I’ve loved my entire life.

Seasoned, steamed rice dumplings are called undi/oondi in Konkani. They are a popular Mangalore - Udupi breakfast. They are also called pundi gatti in Tulu. Undis show up atleast once a fortnight in most Konkani homes.

To begin with this particular recipe, we have to prepare a few components. You can cook steamed rice dumpling (undi) using 12 ingredients and 5 steps. Here is how you cook it.

The ingredients needed to make Steamed Rice Dumpling (undi):
  1. Prepare 2 cups rice washed and soaked for 3 hours
  2. Get 2 cups fresh coconut(removed black skin)
  3. Prepare 1 tsp mustard seeds
  4. Get 1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds
  5. Prepare 1 tbs split black gram (urad dal)
  6. Make ready To taste salt
  7. Prepare Tamarind onion pickle
  8. Make ready 1 lemon size tamarind
  9. Prepare 1 onion finely chopped
  10. Get 1 tsp oil
  11. Prepare 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  12. Get 1 tsp red chilli powder

Undi is a traditional GSB breakfast prepared in most of the GSB homes. Even Mangalorean bunts have their own version which they prepare like pundi ghasi and marwai pundi. Undi means rice dumplings which are steamed either in the steamer known as Pedavan or you may also steam it the Pressure cooker without adding pressure. I have steamed undi s even in the microwave by covering with lid and also.

Steps to make Steamed Rice Dumpling (undi):
  1. Grind soaked rice with fresh coconut adding water in mixer grinder.
  2. Heat oil in pan. Add mustard seeds, Urad Dal & fenugreek. Sauté well till urad dal becomes golden brown, add ground batter adding water & salt.
  3. Stir continuously till this batter becomes smooth and remove from pan. Let it cool little.
  4. Shaped in balls form, make a small depression in each balls.Steamed this balls in steamer for fifteen minutes.
  5. Soak lemon size tamarind in water for few minutes and extract it's pulp.Add salt, water and chopped onion to tamarind pulp and mix well.Now temper it with mustard seeds & red chilli powder.(No need of boiling)

Undi means rice dumplings which are steamed either in the steamer known as Pedavan or you may also steam it the Pressure cooker without adding pressure. I have steamed undi s even in the microwave by covering with lid and also. Its basically steamed rice dumplings that are served with a chutney or sambhar or just coconut oil drizzled over it. Its such a simple and yet flavorful breakfast dish. Undi or rice dumplings are a favourite breakfast item in South India.
